Custom Kiln-Dried & Heat Treated Boat Shipping Skid

At Integrated Packaging Systems we design and manufacture shipping pallets for commercial and industrial uses. As shown in the project highlight here, we are able to create small to large custom pallets for application in specific industrial uses.
We were contracted by a Marine industry customer to build a boat skid, a high-strength pallet designed for the shipping and storage of large boats. After receiving the customers' boat specifications, we embarked on designing a complete custom skid strong enough to satisfy the load specifications with a reasonable safety factor. We elected to use KDHT (kiln dried, heat treated) boards for the top and bottom halves of the skid assembly, along with notched stringers allowing for insertion of forklift tines. KDHT would provide high strength, predictable behavior ("wet" woods can shrink and warp), and compliance with international shipping laws. 3" screws were selected for fastening the boards together.
Once assembled, our boat skid occupied a footprint of 180" by 86". Dimensional inspections and a functionality testing ensured that the skid met the design standards. Despite working on a small lead time, we were able to deliver a complete solution to the customer.
